Thermal Modeling of the Material Removal Rate for High-speed Small Hole EDM Drilling Using the Computational Fluid Dynamics Method

A thermal model of the material removal rate (MRR)for high-speed small hole EDM drilling (HSHED) was developed based on the simulated temperature distribution in the workpiece. The plasma expansion model used for the temperature simulation is the first-stage-expansion model which was obtained through actual observations of the arc plasma. The heat flux varied with the time and the spatial coordinates was used as the thermal loading condition. The numerical computation adopts the enthalpy methods to solve the energy equation. The simulation result of single discharge shows that the depth-diameter ratio of the crater is smaller than that obtained from conventional simulation and has better agreement with that of the actual crater. Finally, the MRR experiments were carried to verify the validity of the model. The comparison shows that predicts are in good agreement with experimental results.
