ANALYSIS OF STABILITY CRITERIA OF PIN-JOINTED BARS MECHANISMS

This paper broadens conventional concepts of structural stability to explain some non-generic stability phenomena of pin-jointed bars mechanisms. Based on the energy criterion and analytical expression of tangential stiffness matrix, structural stability of mechanisms is expounded as a result from reinforcement of feasible internal forces caused by prestress or loading. Classical stability criterion for prestressed mechanism is strictly proved, and clarified to be equivalent to positive definitive second-order variation of potential energy. Imperfection of this criterion is also pointed out. Further investigations on stability of mechanisM stiffened by loading are carried out, and a corresponding stability criterion is developed and explained by means of an illustrative example. Some discussions are provided in the end to benefit understandings of structural stability of pin-bar mechanisms.
