Empirical Research on International Market Power of Paper Products in China

On the basis of time-series statistical information of paper products (SITC 4819) in China and Canada from 1999 to 2007, this paper adopts Goldberg & Knetter (1999) model with appropriate modification and carries out an empirical measure of market priceplus ability of Canadian and Chinese paper industry in the United States. The results showed that the international market power of Chinese paper product export have a big gap from strong international paper countries. The writer thinks that this is mainly caused by Chinese export enterprises overcompetitive behavior of low prices and the low concentration、irrational product structure and overreliance on primary factor of Chinese paper industry. Only by virtue of innovative means integrating the global economic and technological resources, and upgrading the value chain of upstream and downstream, can a good interaction pattern of international market power and innovation be created, thus to enhance Chinese international market power of paper product export.
