Herbicidal properties of Peganum harmala L. residues and their potential use in biological weed control

This study was conducted to test herbicidal potential of aboveground dry Peganum harmala material on seedling growth of Amaranthus relroflexus. Results indicate that seedling length, seedling dry weight, leaf area and total chlorophyll content of A. relroflexus were significantly diminished in soil treated with P. harmala residues compared to the no residues control. In the presence of charcoal, inhibitory effects of P. harmala residue were significantly reduced. Adding nitrogen fertilizer to residue-amended soils did not significantly increase A. retroflexus growth. As a consequence, inhibition effects of P. harmala residue were not attributed to temporary nitrogen deficiency. Biotic soils treated with 8 and 12 g residues had more negative effects on A. retroflexus growth parameters than abiotic soils suggesting the role of micro-organisms in inhibitory activity of P. harmala. Residue-amended soils were rather high in electrical conductivity and rich in organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, manganese and zinc when compared to unamended soils. Hence, A. relroflexus growth reduction was not related to availability of soil nutrients. Amended soils were found to contain significantly higher amounts of phenolic compounds than unamended soil. The study concludes that P. harmala residue reduced growth A. retroflexus by releasing water-soluble phenolic acids in soil.
