Australian fire monitoring and assessment using CCD and IRS data of HJ-1-A/B

China had been successfully launched the first two small optical satellites (HJ-l-A/B) of the Small Satellite Constellation for Environment and Disaster Monitoring and Forecasting (SSCEDMF) on September 6, 2008. SSCEDMF boards two main kinds of sensors, Wide Coverage CCD Cameras (CCD) and Infrared Camera (IRS)which can be used in fire monitoring and assessment because of relative high spatial resolution. On February 6, 2009, an extremely serious forest fire happened in south eastern Australian. As the data and service center in China, National Disaster Reduction Center of China (NDRCC) timely provided the SSCEDMf and other satellites data to Australia. Furthermore, we use CCD and the middle infrared band to obtain fire spot, fire burned and damaged area, fire tendency and risk analysis products which were also provided to Australian government and institutions. The results showed that SSCEDMF images could be very useful to fire monitoring and assessment.
