An Assessment of Challenges for the Construction of the Nezt Generation Nuclear Power Plants in the United States
New construction of nuclear power plants was effectively terminated in the United States (U.S.) approximately 30 years ago. Since that time, many industry experts have retired and many construction companies that worked in the industry have long since re-tooled for other types of construction work. Recently, interest in nuclear power has increased and multiple nuclear power plants are slated for construction in the next few years. While construction will soon commence, the U.S. construction industry lacks both experience and training programs in nuclear construction. The objective of this paper is to identify past challenges in the nuclear construction industry, assess the current framework for nuclear construction, and identify challenges that may be encountered during the construction of new nuclear facilities. This will provide background for constructors to transition to the nuclear power industry, a critical factor for the successful construction of the next generation of nuclear power plants.
