Strategic Partnering Approach in Industrialised Building System: A Malaysian Construction Industry Perspective
Among the reasons why the Industrialized Building System (IBS) has gained popularity and being highly promoted by the Malaysian government is primarily because the system claimed that it could enhance the level of productivity, improve quality, able to cope with the shortage of skilled labour and reduce the dependency on foreign labour. The incorporation of strategic partnering in the IBS is seen to be a value added and strong approach in its implementation and project delivery. This is due to the nature of the IBS construction approach itself that requires close integration and cooperation amongst stakeholders and construction players particularly with regard to the upstream and downstream relationship of the project delivery system. The aim of the main research is to develop a guideline on the implementation of strategic partnering in the IBS construction approach. The methodology adopted in the main research is through quantitative as well as qualitative approach using questionnaire survey and interviews respectively. Initial results from the interviews have indicated that the majority of contractors had agreed to implement strategic partnering in their organization but in addition, they also need greater participation, incentives and support from the clients or government.
