Ezploring the Impact of Collaborative Working on Construction Project Performance

It is believed that improving collaborative working can have a substantial impact on project performance, not only with regard to time, cost and quality objectives, but also with regard to more general outcomes (e.g. greater innovation and improved user satisfaction). However, such benefits are less well understood due to limited research and in particular an absence of a robust and appropriate methodology. The purpose of this research is to explore this shortfall and seek to evaluate these wider aspects of project performance relative to the different degrees of collaborative working. In doing so, a taxonomy of collaborative working is produced and the associations between collaborative working and project performance are analysed. To achieve this, two key concepts need to be developed into a measurable format. In the process of the measurement development, the basic philosophy of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied and a Likert Scale is then adopted for measurement design. After subsequent evaluation, involving unidimensionality and reliability testing, the paper presents the results of cluster analysis and association exploration. The conclusion strongly supports the existence of a strong positive linear relationship between collaborative working and project performance.
