Conflict in the Partnering: Why It Is Caused and How to Resolve It

Recent years, partnering has a great application in construction industry for its advantages of sharing risk, reducing cost and improving project performance. Whereas, the high failure rate has became the difficult problem for the academic researcher and partnering manager. This article firstly identifies the key concepts of the partnering, the trust and the conflict between the partners, then analyzes the model of partnering dissolution caused by the conflict between partners and indicates that partners’ conflict may cause the decline of the partners’ trust and lead to the dissolution of their cooperation. On this basis, the paper studies three types of conflicts (the objective conflict, the process conflict and the outcome conflict) to show how these conflicts are caused, developed and have a negative influence on the cooperation. Finally, this paper gives the relative partnering management suggestions and points out that the compatible collaborative goals, avoidance of the inside competition, the interdependence and the justice of the outcome distribution are the critical factors for the partnering success. This study has great academic and realistic meanings to guide the cooperative practice and improve the partnering management efficiency for the cooperative partners in the construction industry.
