Population aging is inevitable with the social and economic development. Many developed country in the world has already paced into the aging society. Shanghai has been in the aging society 10 years averagely before the whole nation, and this trend into a higher aging society won’t change in a short time. In a long time, more attention should be paid to solve the problem of aging population. Thus, the housing status and living quality of the elders are the problems the government and all social sectors should concern about. This paper firstly describes Shanghai elders’ care and housing pattern, and the current situation of elders’ communities. Then the trend of Shanghai elders’ care and housing pattern and related factors are discussed. Based on the real demand for old age care and living, the characteristics of elders’ communities and its roles in the elders’ housing industry are expounded in this paper. Further the problems and solutions to the development of the elders’ communities are proposed. Finally conceptions on how to develop elders’ communities in Shanghai are depicted in the paper. Because the elders’ communities can adapt to different kinds of care pattern and satisfy the growing demands from the society, it would have very broad prospects. With more attention to elders’ communities and more policies, standards and public consciousness supporting such communities, this care and housing pattern will surely be accepted and enjoyed by the aged.
