Analysis on Floodplain Wetlands and Ecological Water Demand of the Yellow River

The Yellow River spans three climatic zones and crosses various landform types such as plateau, mountain land, hill and plain etc; its main stream and branches are roundabout among mountains and plains, forming wetlands in the Yellow River Basin of various types and with comparatively higher biodiversity. From source region to estuary, it can be divided into four major types approximately; first, alpine meadow or lake wetland in headwaters region; second, wetland in reservoir region of river reservoir; third, floodplain wetland which has close relation with channels of the Yellow River; fourth, wetland in the Yellow River Delta of estuary region. Floodplain wetlands of the Yellow River are the important component of ecosystem of the Yellow River, their existence, development and evolvement are closely related to the Yellow River water resources. This thesis analyzes characteristics and ecological functions of floodplain wetlands in upper, middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, and also analyzes floodplain flood demand and water supply conditions, combining with the characteristics of the Yellow River water resources, hydrological regime of rivers and terrain conditions of wetlands in riverside zones.
