Response of Bank-full Discharge Variation in Inner Mongolia Reach on Runoff Process

The Inner Mongolia reach of the Yellow River is a wandering-braided river way and its bed is adjusted by scouring and silting along with the variation in water and sediment development. The reach has been severely silted since 1987 and has brought forward a series of problems such as reduction in drainage capacity, rising of small discharge water level, long-time high water level in ice flood period and severe situation of disaster, all of which are closely related to the bank-full discharge of the main channel. This paper, based on the cross sections of hydrological stations and data about flow and sediments of Inner Mongolia reach, has analyzed the variation process of the bank-full discharge at different stages and has established a relation between the bank-full discharge and annual runoff, flood season runoff, peak discharge and flood volume whose discharge exceeds 1,000 m/s proceeding from the influential factors and according to the retardation theories of the bed adjustment and appropriate relational expression has been lodged. Moreover, it also suggests that the reduction of peak discharge and continuous inadequacy of runoff is the fundamental causes for the continuous reduction of bank-full discharge and reduction of flood and ice flood drainage in recent years.
