Analysis of the Surface Water Quality Status and Developing Trend of the Yellow River Basin in the Early 21st Century

In recent years, the water quality pollution in the Yellow River Basin has not been alleviated effectively. At present, the river courses attaining class Ⅰ~Ⅲ is a little bit more than one third of its total length, however the river courses with water quality being worse than class Ⅴ, which can not be used at all, accounts for one third of its total length. The data of water quality in the whole basin from 2000 to 2007 show that water quality in the mainstream show an improvement trend, however in the tributaries a deterioration trend is shown. According to the analysis, the reasons that cause this situation are the increased precipitation in the whole basin and runoff in the river course, the unified regulation of the water resources in the mainstream, and the decreased pollutant entering the mainstream directly. Therefore some measures have to be taken, such as further strengthening the control of total discharge of the pollutants, decreasing the sewage volume and the total amount of pollutants into the rivers in the whole basin, further strengthening the water functional zones management, and paying more attention to the provincial boundaries and the drinking water source areas, further improving the Yellow River water regulation system, realizing the functional continuous flow of the Yellow River, popularizing the view on saving water and positively guiding in the practice.
