The Evolutionary Characteristic of Coastal Erosion in the Changjiang Estuary

This study focuses on the evolutionary models of coastal erosion during the past two decades in the Changjiang Estuary, a complicated river mouth area. Based on the interpretation of geological data collected in the Estuary in 1980s using the GIs (Geography Information System) and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) methods, we made a preliminary study on the newest spatial distribution pattern of coastal erosion and sedimentation in the Estuary. The results demonstrate that the North Branch of the Estuary is disappearing under erosion while the South Branch is growing under sedimentation. In a selected area with typical erosional features, we studied the beach profiles measured in different years. In accordance with their shapes, the profiles can be grouped into different types, such as the type with a smooth and straight coast, the type with a wide and steep coast, and the type with a sharp and steep coast. In accordance with the variation in profile features, they can be divided into the type with parallel and retreating coasts, the type changing from concave to convex upward, and the type changing from a wide and steep slope to a sharp and steep slope.
