Comparison of Different Approaches to Determining Bankfull Discharge in the Lower Yellow River

The magnitude of bankfull discharge is an important indicator for the discharge capacity of the Lower Yellow River (LYR), and it is a key task to predict accurately bankfull discharges at hydrometric sections before each experiment of regulating water and sediment in the Yellow River. In this paper, the definition of bankfull discharge is proposed, and the identification rules are given of determining zones of main channel and corresponding bankfull levels, according to the geometric characteristics of cross-sectional profiles in the LYR during different periods. Reviews of existing approaches to determining bankfull discharge indicate that they are usually only applicable to small river basins or specified hydrometric sections with neglectable bed evolution. Then four different approaches are listed herein to determining bankfull discharge in the LYR, including a method of using the mean daily stage-discharge relation, a method of using the observed stage-discharge relation, a method of using the stage-velocity relation and a method of using the simulated stage-discharge relation from a one-dimensional hydrodynamic model. Advantages, shortcomings and applicability of these approaches are analyzed in detail. Finally, Huayuankou section in the braided reach of the LYR is selected as a study section in this paper and different bankfull discharges are computed using these approaches. Calculated results show that the forth method proposed in this paper has higher accuracy than other methods.
