The Use of Bayesian Networks to Support Integrated Watershed Management-Case Study of Jiuyuangou Watershed (the Yellow River)

In this article, focusing on the Jiuyuangou watershed, a generalized approach is presented how to construct a BN, following a four-step approach; ① identifying management measures, ② identifying critical intermediate and exogenous variables, ③ establishing discretization states of variables, ④ filling in CPTs. Meanwhile, Four watershed management scenarios were developed related to aspects of environmental protection and economical development by use of the Scenario analysis. The scenarios are a current situation scenario, a high economical development scenario, an environmental protection scenario and a high economical development and environmental protection scenario. Finally, these scenarios are inputted into the BNs to compare each other. The study concludes that watershed management scenario 4 (high economical development and environmental protection scenario), is the best strategy comparing to other 3 watershed management scenarios.
