The Effect of Hydropower Station Scheduling on River Hydrological Regime Based on Fractal Theory

The predicted increase in hydropower station building due to energy demand is expected to affect river water regime and, in turn, cause both river ecosysteM impacts. To understand the potential impact of hydropower station scheduling on river hydrological regime, this paper outlines a methodology based on fractal dimension to quantify the effects of hydropower station scheduling on river water regime for two hydropower stations in the upstream of the Yellow River of China. Using observed data from the Xunhua hydrological, the Xiaochuan and the Shanquan stations, the effect for wet year, normal year, and dry year resulted from hydropower station scheduling were simulated for Liujiaxia hydropower and Yanguoxia stations in the Yellow River. In the wet year, results showed the rate of variation of 15. 31% in river water regime resulted from the Liujiaxia hydropower station, and 2.22% from the Yanguoxia hydropower station. At the dry year, results showed the rate of variation of 8. 58% in river water regime resulted from the Liujiaxia hydropower station, and 3.54% from the Yanguoxia hydropower station. The effect of the Liujiaxia hydropower station scheduling on river hydrological regime is evident during the wet year and normal year, the rate of variation of the two stations is above 15%. The impact of the Yanguoxia hydropower station scheduling on river water regime is not evident during the three representative years, the rate of variation of the three stations is below 5%. Overall, it is concluded that the hydropower station with a bigger regulation capacity will greatly affect the river natural hydrological regime that is closely related to river ecosystem structure and stabilization.
