Flood issue in Yellow River basin has been a prevalent topic for thousands of years. As part of it, the Yiluo River basin located at the mid-lower catchment plays a key role by controlling the flow that merges into the main river. This study concerns with an integrated modelling method in the Yiluo River basin which comprehensively applies cutting-edge GIS technique, advanced hydrological and hydraulics modelling using SOBEK tools, multi-reservoir-based optimisation operations and the link to numerical weather predictions that can simulate flow situations and find out the utilities of operational flood management in preventing or mitigating the flood situation in the Yiluo River basin. A SOBEK RR/1D/2D model was partly calibrated with a historical storm event started from 04:00, 26th, July 1996 to 23:00, August 9th, 1996 and finally stopped with a high correlation of 0.97 at basin outlet Heishiguan station. Both structure and non-structure measurements were used as two integrated SOBEK-based model applications; multi-reservoir-based operation rules which were tested by a C # program giving the optimised results for SOBEk scenario simulations in downstream flash flood controlling, and a study linked to numerical weather predictions showing the result comparisons from using two different methods: rain gauge local weather observation and MM5 local weather prediction, thus the application provided with the capability of such an integrated flood forecasting system in extending forecast lead time. From this research it is possible to provide a computational support for flood control and management, as well as to minimize the damage caused by flash flood and save peoples lives, although more investigations are suggested.
