Delayed Response Model of Bankfull Discharge in Inner Mongolia Reach of the Yellow River

Locating in the upper and middle Yellow River, the Inner Mongolia reach is surrounded by the large Yellow River irrigation area, which means that the fluvial processes of this river reach have great influence on the flood control and agriculture production of this hydrographic basin. Take Bayangaole and Sanhuhekou stations as examples, analysis of flow and sediment load data of these two stations at the Inner Mongolia reach of the Yellow River indicated that the current years bankfull discharge of Bayangaole station is related to the previous 10 years flow and sediment load conditions, while it is related to the previous 14 years flow and sediment load conditions at Sanhuhekou station. That is to say, current year s bankfull discharge is determined by the accumulated effects of flow and sediment load in consecutives years, which can be described as the delayed response model for bankfull discharge. The methods of bankfull discharge calculation for Bayangaole and Sanhuhekou stations were developed based on the delayed response model for bankfull discharge. Tests against measured bankfull discharges at both Bayangaole and Sanhuhekou stations shown that the delayed response models for bankfull discharge can accurately describe the adjustment of bankfull discharge in this river reach.
