Ponderation on Water and Sediment Regulation of the Yellow River
This paper analyzes the necessity of undertaking water and sediment regulation of the entire Yellow River course as the silting and ice flood control in Ningxia-Inner Mongolia section have all been worsened since the united operation of Longyangxia and Liujiaxia reservoirs was launched in 1986. Combined with the actual situations of the reservoirs in upper reaches and the channel of Ningxia-Inner Mongolia section, the paper further analyzes the difficulties, risks and feasibilities of undertaking water and sediment regulation of the entire river course. Under the current conditions, three approaches are put forward, involving: ① sluicing Ningxia-Inner Mongolia section by increasing the discharge of Liujiaxia reservoir during the period from the ending of ice flood to the beginning of diversion for irrigation; ② with plentiful inflow from upper Yellow River in successive years, undertaking water and sediment regulation combined with flood control; ③ with the great floods from tributaries flowing into the lower reaches to Liujiaxia reservoir, such as Huangshui River, undertaking water and sediment regulation by using these floods fully and optimizing the regulation of reservoirs on mainstream.
