Sediment Management in Heavily Sedimented Reservoir Affected by Volcanic Eruption-Case Study: Wlingi Reservoir in Brantas River Basin Indonesia
Wlingi Reservoir is located in the Brantas River basin in East Java Province, Indonesia. The reservoir is located close to Mt. Kelud which is the active member of a volcanic cluster in the basin. More than 30 eruptions of Mt. Kelud had been recorded in historical times with 3 to 30 years interval or 15 years on an average, resulted tremendous damage over the area. The most recent eruption of Mt. Kelud occurred in November 2007 with new dome created in the previous crater. But, previous eruption happened on February 10, 1990 produced tremendous volume of volcanic ash spread over south to west slopes of Mt. Kelud, depositing within a 20 km radius after the eruption. Succeeding rainfalls also caused lahar damages along the Semut, Jari, Putih, Badak, and Srinjing rivers and finally will be deposited in Wlingi Reservoir. Until today, the reservoir storage capacity is preserved by maintaining continuously through mechanical dredging and flushing. Jasa Tirta I Public Corporation, the Brantas and Bengawan Solo River Basins Management Agency, has been conducting maintenance dredging by using superannuated dredger with an annual dredging performance of 0.23 million m3. About 10 million, m3 of sediment had been removed from Wlingi Reservoir by dredging since 1988. Procurement of a new dredging system was realized to recover the capacity for peak operation of the power station. The dredging system had a capacity of 0.5 million. m3/year and a reach of 7~10 m in depth, and included a cutter suction dredger, a booster pump system and other related equipments. However, the dredging activity is a temporary solution with high cost due to a large amount of sediment deposit transported from the Mt. Kelud area. Sediment flushing has been conducted mostly in rainy season by coordinated gate operations and had been proved to be an effective measure to maintain storage capacity. More than 5 million, m3 of sediment had been removed from Wlingi Reservoir by sediment flushing since 1990.Another measure is bypass channel (short cut)construction to downstream of Wlingi and Lodoyo Reservoirs that proposed to be completed in the near future.
