Preliminary Study on Sediment Dredging in a Reservoir with Pipes Powered by Natural Water Head Difference

The paper intends to address the severe sedimentation problems of the reservoirs on the Yellow River. Discharging sediment from a reservoir helps to prolong the usable life of the reservoir. A movable pipe equipped with a self-suction head, which is powered by natural water head difference, is used to discharge the deposits from a reservoir to the place outside. The investigation, which is done on the applications of the approach on the several medium-and small-sized reservoirs, shows that the approach, when applied in a proper manner with rich water available, is able to discharge not only the deposits formed in the year when it is applied, but also those formed in the previous years, with the cost being a quarter of that with a dredging ship. The dredging approach using self-suction piping is found efficient in sediment discharging, and economic in energy consuming. It is considered applicably on large-sized reservoirs where there are large enough water head difference available and where the deposits consist of mainly fine sediment particles and less consolidated if such critical problems are solved as how to mobilize the self-suction head, control the suitable sediment concentration in the pipes, and layout the pipes not only in the reservoirs but also through the dams.
