Effectiveness of the Yellow River Water and Sediment Regulation through Different Grades
Less water with more sediment, water and sediment in discord is the biggest problem with the Yellow River. By analyzing relationship between river evolution and loss of flood disaster and the discharge of the flood and sediment concentration in the Lower Yellow River, we realize that the water and sediment of the Yellow River must be controlled through different grades. Firstly, the principle of flood control should be flood retaining and peak cutting, and the flood discharge should be controlled below 2,600 m3/s as the common or small flood with small sediment concentration. Secondly, based on the comprehensive consideration of the river channel sculpting and the efficiency of sediment transporting and the losses of floodplain, the flood discharge should be avoided between 4,000 m3/s and 6,000 m3/s to the large floodplain or common floodplain flood. In the end, the principle of flood control should be floodplain silting and channel eroding. Anyway, by carrying out the principle of the water and sediment control through different grades, we can have the effect of floodplain silting and channel eroding and reducing the secondary perched river deteriorated posture, to avoid the destruction of river morphology and floodplain serious disaster at the common floodplain floods with great sediment concentration.
