Analysis on Measures and Effects for Sediment Harnessing and Utilization of the Yellow River

This article analyses features of the Yellow River sediment transporting to the estuary, piling in channels and its manual handling and utilization during different phases, expounds the potential and capability to harness and utilize the Yellow River sediment by various measures such as impounding, regulating, transporting, diverting, dredging and utilizing, and compares the economic invest and performing effect of those measures. It shows that the three alluvial sections have the characteristics of more discharge, more transporting and more sedimentation under the natural situation, the beach-trough lifts in parallel, and the riverbed lifts fast, this poses a serious threat to the safety of flood control. By summarizing the past practice, this paper shows that the relatively reasonable period of sediment distribution is the time during which reservoir plays a more important role in sediment retaining and water and sediment regulation. It suggests constructing key reservoirs to actualize combining the impounding, regulating and transporting as the best measure for sediment harnessing and utilization. However, from the angle of solving the Yellow River sediment problem in a long-term period, the capability for each measure all has its limitation. The basic approach for sediment harnessing and utilization is to take various measures such as impounding, regulating, transporting, diverting, dredging and utilizing for comprehensive management. Presently, it s urgent to construct projects such as Guxian Reservoir, etc. to carry out the combined water and sediment regulation exerted by the reservoir group, to realize no sedimentation in channels and maintain normal channels in the Lower Yellow River for a longer period of time.
