Study on Characters of Water and Sediments and Sedimentation Rules in the Lower Yellow River during the Last 50 Years
Taking monthly runoff and sediments series measured at Huavuankou and Lijin hydrologic stations of the 54 years (1950~2003) as the basic series data, and by using wavelet analysis (WA) method, the multi-temporal scale variation characters and relation between water and sediments in the lower Yellow River during the last 50 years have been identified. Analyzing results show that due to the whole variation trends of runoff and sediments (runoff decreasing, sediments reducing, incoming sediment coefficient increasing and sediment transporting capacity decreasing along with year, etc.), the sedimentation before 1986 is increasing slowly but decreasing after 1986. Since the runoff shows obvious downward trend after 1986, the erosion ability of runoff is decreasing along with year, which makes the sediment erosion-accumulation processes change into single sediment accumulation process, and causes the relation of water and sediments become much worse. Furthermore, increasing runoff is the basic way to improve the relation of water and sediments and to reduce sedimentation in the lower Yellow River.
