Study on Applicability of the Chinese Formulas for Current-wave Sediment Transport Capacity in the Yellow River Estuary

The Chinese formulas for sediment transport capacity due to current and waves can be classified into three types. The first type of these formulas has a kind of structure as Sm=K((|uc|)+β|uw|)m)/((ghws)n), like the one by Cao Zude. The second type is represented by the formula by Dou Guoren, which is based on energy principle. The last type is represented by the formula by Cao Wenhong, which is based on the turbulent burst. The paper shows analysis and comments on the formulas from the perspectives of physic mechanisms and practical application. The authors used the data measured in the Yellow River estuary to test the applicability of the selected formulas in the Yellow River estuary. The preliminary test results show that the both formulas by Dou Guoren and Cao Zude, which are quite simple in structure and justifiable theoretically, give a relatively good and similar performance, we must point it out that all the Chinese formulas cannot give quite satisfactory performances in the Yellow River estuary where high sediment concentration, highly-movable bed, non-systemic measured data, uncertainties in understanding settling velocity and incipient moment and other factors make the capacity calculation more complicated and more difficult. More in-depth research of the capacity for the estuary is necessary to do.
