Modeling of the Irrigation Water Requirement Forecast in Wujia Yellow River Irrigation Area

Wujia Yellow River Irrigation Area (WJYRIA) is one of the largest irrigation districts in Henan province, whihc is a representive in the lower Yellow River. This study developed the irrigation water requirement forecast model based on the principle of soil water balance. The irrigation water demand can be forecasted through the model calculation, that is to say, the next period irrigation water resource from the Yellow River could be known by the model. The main input parameters of the model included soil water content, forecasted precipitation in the next period and so on. And the model also calculated irrigation schedule such as irrigation norm and irrigation time. Combing with irrigation area, local irrigation water resource and other parameters, the model could calculate water intake from Yellow River. There are differences between the processes of the model forecast and the actual water utilization for different time step, its descending order of fitting steps is as the follows; year, productive stage, month and ten days. The longer the time step is, the better it fits. The model application can change the situation of developing irrigation schemes in accordance with the designed irrigation schedule or experience in the old days, and provide real-time guidance of Yellow River irrigation water distribution amount for the WJYRIA.
