Evaluating Recovery and Reuse of Return Flow in Paddy Rice Cropping System Using a Distributed Hydrological Model
The physically-based SWAT model was modified to simulate hydrological cycle and water balance of small watershed of irrigation system (SWIS). The effect of recovery and reuse of return flow on water cycle at the field and SWIS scales was evaluated by scenario analysis using a calibrated model. Results showed recovery and reuse of return flow through ponds and drainage channel can reduce canal water supply of irrigated area, and will not lead to decrease in rice yield, thus increases irrigation water productivity. It also can reduce runoff and percolation from paddy fields, and reduce nitrogen and phosphorus losses, which results in reduction in water pollution and environment protection.
