Semi-rigid overlays, an economic construction method for road surfaces, industrial floors and surface protection systems
A semi-rigid overlay consists of open porous asphalt of which the voids are filled with a high strength free flowing hydraulic mortar. This system combines the flexibility of asphalt and the strength of cementitious material. On a sufficient load bearing basic it is used as a jointless surfacing system. In comparison to asphalt the load bearing capacity and also the resistance against water hazardous fluids are higher. In comparison to concrete the layer is much more flexural. Due to the mortar, developed by using modern technology, the system enables only short construction time and may be restored into service shortly after application. Alternatively to surface protections based on synthetic substances the above mentioned semi-rigid (flexural) overlays may very well serve as a protection system against water hazardous liquids.
