Utilization of constructed wetlands for polishing effluent from secondary sewage treatment
Several years constructed wetland pilot studies were conducted to investigate the polishing performance of the effluent from two sewage treatment plants in Beijing, China. The pilot systems, including two horizontal subsurface flow (HSF) constructed wetlands and two vertical subsurface flow (VSF) constructed wetlands, were established. Five kinds of media were chosen to test their absorption capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus and three kinds of native aquatic plants were chosen to test their absorption capacity of nitrogen and phosphorus by test. The results showed the subsurface flow constructed wetlands polished the effluent well, which averaged removal of SS and NH3-N were more than 90% and 75% respectively, and averaged removal rates of CODCr, TN and TP were about 25%, 30% and 50% respectively. Due to weak pollutant concentration from sewage treatment plants, the bio-degradable processes, especially denitrification and bio-phosphorus removal, in the wetland systems were limited.
