Nitrogen removal in aerated biofilter with shell carrier
Shell is a kind of marine-product waste; its fundamental ingredient is calcium carbonate. The shell possessing enough hardness and coarse surface can be used as biofilm carrier and the alkalinity resource for nitrification. This paper investigated nitrogen removal performance in Aerated Biofilter (ABF) for synthetic domestic wastewater treatment. The filling rate of shell is 9.3%, which has the averaged size of 5cm diameter. For improving the system startup, the ABF was inoculated with extra sludge taken from the 3rd wastewater treatment plant, Dalian Development Zone. Averaged total nitrogen (TN)removals of ABF in startup period, hydraulic retention time (HRT) 4 hours, 8 hours and 12 hours were 42.6%, 52.2%, 79.3% and 92.6%, individually. The ranges of effluent nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) and nitrite nitrogen (NO2-N) concentrations were 0.015-0.51 mg/L and 0.034-0.35 mg/L, individually. It is suggested that this lower NOx-N concentration and higher TN removal maybe caused by simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. The shell carrier had obvious effect on buffering acidity caused by nitrification; all of the effluent pH was higher than that of influent, influent pH ranged from 5.52 to 7.82, and effluent pH ranged from 6.95 to 8.37.
