The removal of ammonia from source separated urine by electrolytic ozidization using graphite electrodes

This study investigated the effects of operating parameters on the removal of ammonia from artificial source separated urine by electrolytic oxidization using graphite electrodes, including current density, the ratio of electrode area to solution volume and the dilution multiple. With the current density 50 mA/cm2, the electrode area to solution volume ratio 160 cm2/L, the gap between electrodes 5 mm and the electrolysis time 540 min, nearly 61.43% of ammonia could be removed from pure urine and the energy consumption was 0.29 kWh/L, while the urine was diluted with 10 fold (as volume) of tap water, the ammonia removal efficiency was increased to 88.43% after 180 min electrolysis with the same conditions. The ammonia removal efficiency increased with increase of dilution multiple or the ratio of electrode area to solution volume, but more energy was needed to remove the same amount of ammonia from the diluted urine than the undiluted urine. Conclusion could be made that electrolytic oxidization exhibited the potential to be applied on the remove of ammonia from source separated urine.
