Ecological Industry Concept and Practice in China
Human production-consumption system is a SocialEconomic-Natural Complex Ecosystem (SENCE), sustained by natural life support system, and vitalized by ecological process. Its natural pool consists of Chinese traditional Five Elements: metal (minerals), wood (living organism), water, fire (energy and atmosphere) and soil. Its economic subsystem includes production, consumption, transportation, reduction and regulation while its social agents are technology, institution & culture. Sustainability can only be assured with a human ecological understanding of the complex interactions among environmental, economic, political, and social/cultural factors & with careful planning and management grounded in ecological principles in the context of time, space, process, structure and function. Currently, there is a campaign of SENCE based ecological industry development in China from both ways of top-down and bottom-up. Introduced here are the main characteristics of ecological industry in China. Yangzhou planning case of ecological industry is introduced.
