Study of the coal ultrafine fracures based on atomic force microscope (AFM)
Permeability of coal reservoir is closely related to cleats and exogenous fractures, but the diffusion speed of coalbed methane (CBM) in matrix is determined by the ultrafine fractures, which contributing to permeability can not be ignored. To different coal rank, the matrix has different ultrafine fractures. The representative samples of Taiyuan Xishan coke coal and Jiaozuo anthracite are measured by atomic force microscope (AFM)respectively, and 3D images of coal at the nanometer scale are obtained, from which the size of ultrafine fractures is measurable and pattern look clear. Furthermore, the accessory imager software has analysis functions such as the profile, power spectrums, roughness and fractal dimension, etc. The result shows that coke coal is superior to anthracite in regard to the quantity and connectivity of matrix micro-fractures, which is particularly favorable for the diffusion of CBM. So AFM with nano-meter resolution is a powerful tool to study micro-structure of coal.
