Study on coalbed methane development with low cost drilling and stimulation technologies
The pinnate horizontal well technology and hydraulic fracturing vertical well technology are the main techniques for coal bed methane (CBM) development, but some rough terrain such as mountains, hills, desert, etc. are not suitable for using pinnate horizontal well technology, and half of the hydraulic fracturing wells are low productions because of the factors of geology, drilling and producing. The single well pattern annular aerated pinnate horizontal well technology has the advantages of saving drilling site, shortening drilling cycle and decreasing drilling costs contrasting with the conventional twin well pattern pinnate horizontal wells. It is suitable to drill in rough terrain such as mountains, hills, swamps, etc. The U-pattern horizontal well technology can drill lateral holes from different directions and multiple directional horizontal wells to intersect the cavity vertical well, it can save drilling cost, enhance the single well production, and make best use of the coal seams CBM resources. The ultra-short radius radial horizontal well (URRH) technology has the advantages of convenient orientation and long penetration, it can interconnect plenty of the coal seams natural flaws and enhance the permeability of coal seams. Besides, it comes to conclude that the second fracturing stimulation, the slim hole sidetrack technology, and the composite completion of URRH and hydraulic fracturing technology all have good effects and potentials in increasing the per well production and economic benefits in old and low production wells after the research and application. These technologies all are good low cost drilling and stimulation techniques for CBM development.
