ICT for Civil Engineering in China: Development of Structural Reliability Assessment Systems

The function of structures will certainly deteriorate with time under environmental effects. A systematic analysis so-called life-cycle reliability management including construction stage, normal used stage, and aging stage should be used for a particular structure. In China, there are a great number of existing structures should be assessed. In order to realize this reliability management, a knowledge-based system on reliability assessment in structural engineering (RAISE)has been developed. As the first stage,the system was mostly based on knowledge base of damage assessment experience from experts, afterwards, it was gradually upgraded from qualitative expertise to rational quantitative physical models, and now the concept of information updating has also been introduced into system. In the present paper the new edition of the system RAISE-8, which combines qualitative analysis with quantitative analysis, is introduced.
