ICT for Civil Engineering in China: Information Technology of Bridge Health Monitoring System

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in health monitoring of bridges. Bridge health monitoring systems can offer valuable information in evaluating structural integrity, durability and reliability, and in ensuring optimal maintenance planning and safe bridge operations. At the same time, information technology (IT) is developed rapidly and affecting a variety of fields including the bridge health monitoring system. The authors had the opportunity to prepare the long-term health monitoring system plan for major bridges in Shanghai and Qingdao Bay Bridge in recent years. Based on these actual exercises, the relationship between It and the establishment of health monitoring system is studied in detail in the present paper. IT can be seen as a new angle of view for monitoring system. The relationship between automatic monitoring and manual inspection technologies can be defined clearly according to the need of information acquisition. In addition, data acquisition, storage, disposal and transmission of monitoring system can not be achieved well without the help of IT. It is happy to see that advances in IT (e. g. sensing systems, signal processing, communications and data-mining technology) are providing more and more new tools for the establishment of bridge health monitoring system.
