Application of ICT for Transport Infrastructure Management in Bangladesh

To meet the transport infrastructure management challenges of the 21st Century, the Government of Bangladesh has realized that using of the state of art of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the modern management techniques, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), is an imperative. In this context Transport Sector Coordination (TSC) wing of Planning Commission of Bangladesh has initiated this modern technology to aid for its roles and responsibility of developing and coordinating short and long term policies and plans in the light of transport policy papers NLTP and IMTP. The paper presents the efforts so far made in implementing egovernance in transport infrastructure management in TSC. A transport sector GIS database (TSGD) has been developed incorporating spatial and non-spatial aspects of transport data including related socio-economic information to facilitate,the preparation of transport master plans and appraisal of transport investment projects. The paper also outlines major institutional and technical issues concerning the implementation of an integrated system which will be used by public and private agencies. Finally, the paper mentions how various stakeholders can be integrated with the planning process through dissemination of TSGD data.
