Inevitable Dependancy-The Role of ICT for Disaster Management

Today it is a proven fact that, natural disasters can happen at any place irrespective of the developed, developing or under developed countries/economies and cause a massive destruction to the lives and livelihoods of large population, across the globe. Present day disaster prediction and forecasting of any eventualities mainly depends on the computational power of high end systems and its accuracy in calculating and/or performing the complex simulations to predict the possibilities and the probabilities of occurrence of any event. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) can play a crucial role in disaster prediction, prevention, mitigation and management, having both traditional as well the latest new technologies and media, to proactively monitor the potential risks or impending disaster. ICT also being used to forewarn the public on the risks, the impending danger and requisite mitigation/precaution measures to protect the humankind. ICt also, plays a critical role in disaster management activities (during and aftermath of the eventuality/ disaster) and help support in reconstruction/ coordination process for the affected, to return back to their areas or communities. This paper highlights the effective application of ICT in different stages of disaster management process, to reduce the loss/ damage in terms of socio-economic losses suffered by individuals and/or countries and speed up disaster recovery process for protecting the lifes existence in the vulnerable geographies and its support to make people aware oi the consequences of the disaster and its aftermath impact.
