HYDRAULIC AND MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF HEAVILY COMPACTED SAND-BENTONITE MIXTURE

This paper presents the laboratory test results carried out on heavily compacted sand-bentonite mixture. To measure soil-water characteristic of the mixture in the larger range of suction, a pressure plate apparatus and the filter papers were used. The obtained soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) shows that the results obtained from the two methods are considered consistent. By using a suctioncontrollable oedometer for unsaturated soils, a series of one-dimensional compression tests were performed on unsaturated compacted sand-bentonite mixture at different constant suctions. The test results indicate that the yield stress increases and compression index decreases with increasing the imposed suction. The results also demonstrate that the mixture wetted to saturation and subsequently dried to a suction has the lower yield stress than that wetted straightly to the same suction.
