A13-PARAMETERS UNSATURATED SOIL MODEL BASED ON BOUNDING SURFACE PLASTICITY
A few constitutive models for unsaturated soils have already exist However, the more classic ones like the Barcelona basic model cannot simulate complex volumetric soil behaviors (without forgetting its supreme merit of being the first consistently and rigorously formulated model), nor post-peak softening, while more advanced models comprise generally a larger number of parameters making theM more difficult to apply in practical situations. In the present paper, we present a new unsaturated soil model based on an existing model developed originally for saturated soils (Bardet 1986), which comprises a minimum number of constitutive parameters. The extension to unsaturated states is achieved by following a general methodology previously developed in our laboratory. The capacities of this simple model have been tested. With only 13 parameters, it can reproduce the basic behavior of unsaturated soils such as rebound or collapse upon wetting, depending on the stress level. It can also reproduce post-peak softening and the transition from contractant to dilatant volumetric behavior during undrained shear. Overall, the first tentative of validation gave a reasonably good correlation between simulations and experimental data, and showed encouraging signs for future developments.
