SOME PROBLEMS IN THE CONSTITUTIVE MODELING OF UNSATURATED SOILS

More and more attention have been paid to elastoplastic behavior of unsaturated soils and many elasto-plastic models have been developed in recent years. However, relatively less effort was given to develop the best strategy of constitutive modeling from laboratory tests. There are still some limitations in the existing methods of constitutive modeling. Without recognizing these limitations might lead to misleading results in the constitutive modeling of unsaturated soil behavior. By using two early constitutive models (e.g. the Barcelona Basic Model and the Oxford model) as examples, this paper discusses some problems in the constitutive modeling of unsaturated soils.
