A CAN-based Safety-critical Monitoring System for Tower Cranes
This paper introduces a smart CAN-based safetycritical monitoring system for tower cranes. It is designed to implement the real-time display and storage of crane working parameters and prevent operation causing damages to cranes. The proposed system consists of a distributed network of six smart nodes interconnected via CANbus, and each node contains a basic smart CAN-enabled sensor which is built on a modular design. By comparing mainstreaM wired with wireless communication ways the reason why CANbus is chosen is discussed. The hardware configuration and software model of each smart node are described. Finally, Field experiments are conducted to evaluate the data accuracy, time-delay and bus utilization of the monitoring system, and the results experimentally prove that the system is feasible and suitable for this safety-critical application.
