Influence of PTFE on Electrode Structure for the Performance of PEMFC and 10-cell Stack

A three-layer coated membrane for PEMFC was designed and fabricated by introducing a certain content of PTFE. The property of PEMFC was determined by I-V curves and durability test. EIS technique was used to on-line detect the performance of PEMFC. SEM was used to characterize the microstructure of PEMFC. Also performance of a 10-cell stack was detected. SEM, EIs results show that the improvement of the fuel cell performance and stability are due to the suitable addition of PTFE. It can enhance the interaction between the membrane and the catalyst layer and forM bigger pores and highly textured, which favors for the oxygen and water mass transfer. While superfluous addition of PTFE may covers the surface of catalysts and reduced the pore diameter formed by catalysts. It makes catalysts aggregated and hinders the sufficient contact of Pt/C catalysts with Nafion, which results to the reduction of electrochemical active area.
