Ion Transfer and Accumulation at Ionic Liquid Modified Electrodes

Since 2000 1 a number of studies reporting on the preparation and the electrochemical behaviour of electrodes modified with room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) have appeared in the literature. Some of them report on ion transfer and accumulation at these electrodes. The results of these studies, including the contribution from our groups, will be presented and discussed. Many RTILs form stable droplets, liquid films or monolayers on electrode surfaces. These liquid deposits are stable after immersion into aqueous electrolyte solution. From very beginning these systems were used to study ion transfer across the RTIL | aqueous solution interface 1-10. For electrodes modified with neat RTIL the accumulation of redox anions was noted 1,4, 7. When redox probe is dissolved in RTIL deposit its electrochemical redox reaction generates ion transfer across interface 2-10. Various mechanisms of these processes involving anion and/or cation transfer, expulsion of electrogenerated redox probe or ions constituting RTIL were suggested 2-7 Efficient ion transfer generated by electrochemical redox reactions was observed with heterogeneous electrodes: carbon paste electrodes with RTIL as a binder 8 and carbon ceramic electrodes 9 or sol-gel processed carbon nanofibers film electrodes 10 modified with RTIL.
