Indicators of Thermal Infrared Outgoing Longwave Radiation for Short-term Earthquake Prediction
Satellite remote sensing technique has been used widely to monitor the natural hazard, such as volcanoes, slide and earthquakes, etc., because of it advantages of wide coverage, high temporal resolution and continuation and credibility of the data. Since last 90s, scientists have proposed new methods to predict the earthquake using satellite infrared remote sensing based on the infrared anomaly prior to earthquakes. They also studied a large amount of earthquakes to find out the relationship between earthquake activities and thermal infrared anomalies. The earlier study focused on the qualitative analysis of the infrared images and investigation of the mechanism by analysis of the rock samples in the laboratory. The rapid development of the space techniques provided much more information about the subsurface temperature for earthquake prediction. The studies extended from the mechanism investigation to extraction of the indicators of the thermal infrared anomalies prior to earthquakes. The new methods, including vorticity of longwave radiation, differential temperature in and out the fault zone, were developed. This makes it possible to integrate various infrared information for earthquake prediction.
