Criminal liability for oil pollution damage: an economic analysis
For many years now a large amount of international conventions have been developed through the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Many of those aim at providing compensation to victims of oil pollution damage. Other international conventions, more particularly the so-called MARPOL Convention as well as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) aim at providing international regulations that should prevent oil pollution damage. All of these international conventions are subsequently implemented by the signatory estates within their own legal system.
