A Discrete Size Optimization Method for Frame Structures
This paper proposed a discrete size optimization method for frame structures. The method regards all the cross-section geometry parameters of structures as design variables. A key design variable is defined and interpolated. Bound constraints of other variables are introduced as functions of the key variable. Thus the discrete optimization problem is transformed into a continuous one which can be solved by any continuous-based optimization techniques. Example of frame structure shows that by employing the proposed transforming procedure, correct solutions can be achieved, while continuous-based SQP method cannot obtain correct solution.
