Antimicrobial teztile materials in healthcare and medical wound dressings
Recent developments in antimicrobial textile materials are reviewed with particular reference to healthcare fabrics and fibrous wound dressings. The utilisation of silver (including nanosilver) and copper has drawn particular attention in recent years as antimicrobial agents. Notwithstanding the technical value of antimicrobial textiles, there are concerns and challenges in the application of such agents that relate to issues of resistance, safety and impact on the environment. Light stability and the influence of abrasion and laundering on long-terM functionality are additional considerations.
