A review of literature on breast motion and bra pressure
Over the past two decades, researchers have studied the breast motion and bra pressure with aims to improve the design of sports bra for reducing breast pain and prevent breast injuries during exercises. It would be necessary to review their methodologies and findings before indicating a clear direction for future research of sports bra. Essential electronic databases were searched for relevant articles and they were systematically evaluated. The reported ranges of breast displacements and the uses of reference points varied. The previous findings are difficult to compare due to a lack of standardized coordinate system. The breast movement was influenced by the breast tissue properties, the materials of sports bra and the intensity of exercise. Lower pressure exerted by the bras would be more comfortable, otherwise would undermined health. For future research, a standardized coordinate system and procedure for evaluating the breast movement is needed and the relationship between breast movement and bra pressure comfort should be investigated.
